111 imagesThe gardens at Acorn Bank, near Penrith Cumbria, photographed in August. They are known for their 17th century walled garden with its pond, and stone-built terraces planted with herbaceous perennials, shrubs, grasses and ferns. Elsewhere there are more herbaceous borders, meadow areas and an enclosed herb garden – the walls once heated for growing tender fruit. Here there is the National Trust's largest collection of medicinal and culinary plants with 275 different varieties. In the orchard, which was first planted in the 1930s and 1940s, is a collection of more than 100 apple varieties, plus a selection of pears – here too are vegetable, salad and cut flower beds.
